Mini Halloweeny Horror Movie Review: V/H/S/94

Aright guys, I’m back with another quick and to the point horror movie review for Halloween season.

We started this series off with a classic in City of the Dead and then moved on to something more recent with Initiation. We’re moving on to a movie that was just released this week. It’s the first release in the V/H/S series since 2014 and a reboot of the franchise, V/H/S/94.

Similar to other entries in the franchise, V/H/S/94 is a found-footage anthology consisting of four separate stories presented as VHS tapes that are connected to a fifth overarching story. Interestingly, this is also the first entry in the series that really leans into that old-school retro VHS tape quality for the majority of the movie. Like most anthology movies, there is going to be a mix of good and bad parts throughout.

For the most part, V/H/S/94 stays pretty solid. Stories include local reporters investigating claims of a Rat Man supposedly being seen in the city’s sewers and the story of a young woman who holds a wake for a man where almost no one shows up. And while the tone shifts distinctly in the third short of the movie, all are fun little stories that (mostly) gel well together. There are some definite gory visuals throughout that fans should enjoy.

The stumbling block for me was the overarching story that plays throughout that lead from one short to the next. Not a fan of how that all ends up and is explained. Still, if you’re a fan of the franchise, V/H/S/94 is easily the best entry since the second installment.
