PREVIEW: Sherlock: A Study in Pink #1

If you’re a fan of the BBC show Sherlock, you’ve probably grown accustomed to waiting a long time in between Series of the show. Right now Series 4 is scheduled to air sometime in 2017, a very long three years after Series 3 aired in 2014. And while a one-off special aired last Christmas, most fans are starving for anything Sherlock-related until Series 4 hits the air; myself included. If you happen to be a fan of both comics and Sherlock, then good times are just around the corner.

Titan Comics is set to release Sherlock: A Study in Pink #1 on June 8 in the US and UK. This 52pp special is an English version of the popular Japanese Sherlock Manga and is presented in its original right to left reading order. The art is completely done in black and white and the story is told in full chapters as originally serialised.

While not a new tale for those familiar with the show, A Study in Pink #1 is a great starting point for those who have wanted to check out Sherlock but for whatever reason have not. It is an adaptation of the TV episodes written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and retells the meeting of Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) in modern-day London.

We were lucky enough to receive an advance copy A Study in Pink #1 and while no new ground is covered, it is worth buying alone for the art. While stylized, the art does a fantastic job of portraying the actors and events covered in the TV show. If you’re a fan of the show then you already know that the writing is top-notch.

A Study in Pink #1 will be available with an assortment of covers to choose from when it hits retail shelves. Each cover offers up a different take on the characters. Some stick closely to the Japanese manga art style with one being a more westernized version. Hardcore fans of the show should have a fun time trying to collect them all.
